Charlevoix
Located 150 km east of Québec City on the north shore of the magnificent
St. Lawrence River, Charlevoix has been named a UNESCO World Biosphere
Reserve. The huge shock of a giant meteorite that struck the region more
than 350 million years ago left a rugged landscape bathed by the salt water
of the river. Whale watching has now become a favourite activity for visitors,
who also are impressed with the stunning scenery and warm hospitality.
Sample the gourmet specialties of Charlevoix along the “Route des
Saveurs”, discovering picturesque villages scattered across hillsides
as you taste unique cheeses, experience a warm farm welcome and explore
the special tastes of our bountiful earth.
Laze away an afternoon among historic houses on the winding village streets
of Baie-Saint-Paul, renowned for its art galleries. The picturesque and
friendly Isle-aux-Coudres is accessible via ferry from Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive.
If you prefer to drive along the banks of the St. Lawrence and drink in
the heady landscapes, you can discover other charming villages (Les Éboulements,
La Malbaie, Pointe-au-Pic, Cap-à-l'Aigle or Port-au-Persil) as well
as the region’s various tourist attractions (the casino, the riding
centre, golf courses, various cruises, as well as one of Québec’s
leading musical venues, the Domaine Forget).
In summer, a hike in the Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie and
Grands-Jardins parks is sure to enchant and thrill. In winter, dog sledding
and snowmobiling are popular. Skiers love the deep snow at Mont Grand Fonds
with 14 downhill runs and more than 140 km of cross-country ski trails.
The breathtaking panorama of the river is an added attraction on the slopes
of the Massif de Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, the steepest
runs in North America east of the Rockies. The more adventurous can test
their endurance on the Traversée sportive de Charlevoix, a wilderness
trail more than 50 km long.
With the passing seasons, this inspiring region of vast landscapes provides
the perfect setting for a truly memorable stay at La Pinsonnière.
